The Edward Ellershaw papers consists of five UK President Patterson's letters to Ellershaw (1892-1922), a collection of Ellershaw's student papers and transcripts of student orations (1887-1889), miscellaneous news clippings about Ellershaw, and a transcript of a conversation with Ellershaw, done from memory by former UK archivist Ezra L. Gillis.

British born Edward Ellershaw was a State College of Kentucky alumnus, class of 1889. He was a personal friend of President James K. Patterson, who personally recruited Ellershaw to the College. He was admitted to the Bar and attended Middle Temple of London beginning in June 1892. He was a retired Captain in the British Army and served nearly two-and-a-half years during the Boer war, during which he was awarded a medal with five clasps.
